Silent movies have been hiding scenes of abuse under the mask of pure entertainment for 100 years. Dozens of them lost their copyright on January 1st 2019, so we seized the opportunity to use the vintage footage to highlight the plight of abused women today.
Thus, “Unquiet Voices” was born, a 40-minute movie in which 7 actual victims of domestic violence broke the silence and gave voice to abused characters in silent movies. The voice of real victims was overlapped on the footage and unsilenced every violent scene I, across 7 chapters. On International Women’s Day, we launched unquietvoices.com where women could watch the stories and record their own story of abuse in order to be helped by ANAIS. The movie was screened in cinemas, broadcasted by national televisions, projected in art galleries and introduced as educational material in schools, colleges and even in the Romanian Court of Law.
